Pollution and water quality

Pollution from the river basins

The map of the river catchments and the detail behind the first paragraph on this article is the work of Dr. Ian West, visiting scientist with Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton and Senior Fellow of the Geological Society of London. Dr. West’s rich online source of detail relating to the geology of the Wessex coastline can be found by taking this link.

Brittany’s ‘Green Tides’ – a future threat to the Solent?

The array of UK Government departments, related ‘QUANGO’s and their initiatives aimed at monitoring the environment and the water utilities is bewildering and constantly expanding, evidenced by the recent creation of the Office for Environmental Protection.

Please either click the image above, or select this link, to read a page on which we keep track of the various UK Government departments, monitoring bodies, industry initiatives and related ‘Quangos’ which are directly or indirectly active in matters of water quality.

The length of this list may go some way towards explaining our frustration with the lack of urgency and questionable
strength of the regulatory response. With the water companies operating as commercial businesses primarily accountable to their shareholders, our concerns are shared by many other environmental groups.
