New EU proposal on invasive alien species

The European Commission has proposed a draft Regulation on the eradication or control of invasive alien species which are of concern on an EU-wide scale. It estimates that there were between 1200 and 1800 such species. Some of these are of direct interest in the Solent context because they enter the local ecosystem from ships, their cargoes or ballast water. The aim of the Regulation (which will be directly applicable in each Member State) is not to replace national efforts (which are being taken numb several countries), but to supplement them, e.g. when neighbouring States have taken less effective measures . The draft aims firstly at prevention of release of the alien species, but also on eradification of escaped populations which are capable of being sustainable.
