Even though it spreads right along the South Coast and across the Irish sea, we tend to think of the Fastnet Race as a Solent event. The image on the right shows most of the fleet, beating past the Lizard, round Lands End and up through the channel past the Scillies, or passing south of them. This was on Monday night.
But the arrowed vessel, Spindrift 2, is one of the fast trimarans, hurtling into the oncoming traffic on its way back from the Fastnet, at about 30 kts; At night! One just hopes they have their wits about them! Almost like the wrong way on a motorway!
It has been fascinating watching the race unfold using the Yellowbrick race plot provided by RORC.
